My story

A life that has always centred around food

My life has always centred around food. My mother is a chef, and my grandmother was an avid baker in her time. Growing up, food was always shared with love in our house — usually combined with a cup of (Barry’s) tea. Iykyk.

Throughout my teenage years, I struggled with my relationship with food, and it became something I was fixated on and felt I had to control. In my early twenties food became an escape from stress, dealing with heartbreak and feeling homesick — food became my comfort. During the COVID lockdown, I was eager to improve my overall health and relationship with food, and decided to study nutrition in my spare time (which was ample in 2020).

Studying Nutrition Science opened my eyes to the nuances and complexities of food — availability, knowledge, sustainability and cooking skills were something I took for granted growing up. Reading magazine articles about quick fixes, 6-week shreds and cabbage soup diets gave me a warped understanding of what nutritional needs my body had.

Unlearning these diet-culture ideas allowed me to view food for what it is — fuel for life and fruit for enjoyment.

From there, my passion grew. I decided to pursue a career in dietetics to help others find what works for them — as an individual.

That personal history is why this practice looks the way it does. I know what it is like to feel at war with food, and I know how different life feels on the other side. My clinical work in insulin resistance, weight management and type 2 diabetes is grounded in evidence, but it is delivered by someone who has sat on both sides of the table.
